Shotlark Beta
A screenshot, a scrolling capture or a video — marked up right away
Capture an area, a window or the screen, scrolling captures, annotations, text recognition and screen recording to video or GIF.
What you get
Features
- Captures with a timer, frozen screen, crosshair and magnifier
- Scrolling capture — one long image
- Editor: arrows, shapes, text, steps, blur, crop
- Text and QR code recognition in captures
- Screen recording to video with sound or to GIF, with the cursor and clicks
What’s new
Version 0.14.0
Added
- Scrolling capture works upwards too — handy for chats; the direction is picked by itself.
- Copy a scrolling capture right away: ⌘C, no Done and no editor.
- Shotlark can uninstall itself, with or without your capture history (menu → «Uninstall Shotlark…»).
Changed
- Scrolling capture: dots mark the area's corners, and you can adjust it before you start scrolling; after a click into the page ↩ no longer finishes the capture (finish with Done or ⌘C).
Fixed
- Scrolling capture stitches more reliably: with fast scrolling, in chats with a blinking caret, and it finds its place again if you scroll too abruptly; the side preview has no stripes, and the button bar stays out of the image.
- Text recognition no longer stalls for 15–30 seconds the first time after installing or updating.
Earlier versions
Version 0.13.0
Added
- Settings → About → «License»: Shotlark is in beta now, everything is free. There's also a field for a license key for later, and the day you joined.
Changed
- Welcome tour: Screen Recording is allowed the same way as in my other apps — a row with its status and an «Allow» button; the buttons at the bottom no longer touch the edge.
Fixed
- Error reports now arrive from any country, including Russia: they go through my own server. You turn them on or off in Settings, as before.
- The What's New window now also appears after the first update — before, if Shotlark had been installed recently, it was skipped.
- The update check window and the question about error reports no longer hide behind other windows — they show up in front.
- An unknown shotlark:// link no longer shows a "Could not open the image" error — Shotlark simply skips it.
- Error reports no longer contain the Mac user's name — neither in file paths nor in crash reports.
Version 0.12.0
Added
- Updates: once a day Shotlark looks for a new version and shows it together with what's new — installed with one button. While the screen is being recorded the window won't appear, it waits. To check by hand — the menu bar icon → “Check for Updates…” or Settings → About; the automatic check can be turned off there too.
- Error reports, only with your consent: if something breaks, the developer gets a technical report (Mac model, versions, app state, the work log). Your captures, recordings and file names never go into it. Turn them on at the first step of the welcome tour or in Settings → General.
- What's New after an update, and the whole history of changes — in the menu bar icon's “What’s New…” and in Settings → About.
- A log of the app's work — useful if something went wrong. Your file names and the contents of captures are never written into it.
- Captures of an area, a window, the whole screen and the previous area, with a timer; while selecting, the screen freezes and you get a crosshair and a magnifier; every mode has its own shortcut.
- Scrolling capture: select an area and scroll the page (or turn on auto-scroll) — you get one long image.
- A thumbnail after each capture: copy, save, drag into any app, pin or open in the editor.
- Annotation editor: arrows, shapes, text, pencil, highlighter, numbered steps, hiding (pixelate, blur), crop; two styles — “Classic” and “Pencil”.
- “Image” mode in the editor: edit the capture itself — eraser, color picker with a magnifier; the original stays intact.
- Pin a capture above all windows; double-click brings it back to the editor.
- Text recognition on captures (Russian and English, QR codes).
- Screen recording to video or GIF: an area, a window or the whole screen, computer sound and microphone, cursor and clicks, pause.
- Video editor: trim the start and end, volume, save and export with compression.
- Capture and recording history by day — with search and a retention period.
- Hide desktop icons — by hand or just for the moment of a capture.
- Settings with search, choose the actions in the menu bar icon's menu, shutter sound, PNG, JPG, HEIC and AVIF formats, a file name template.
- A welcome tour on first launch: permissions, shortcuts, what happens after a capture.
Changed
- A new name — Shotlark. Capture history, settings and permissions stay as they were.
- Its own icon — a lark in a capture frame, from the same family as Cliplark. The same one, monochrome, is now in the menu bar too.
- Thicker lines: the five widths now go from 2.5 to 16 — for arrows, shapes, pencil and highlighter. Marks already drawn don't change.
- The “Pencil” style looks more hand-drawn: almost sharp corners, an uneven line with varying width.
- Settings and the welcome tour in a new look, like my other apps: cards, pill buttons, search finds single settings.
- Hints and texts in Russian now speak to you informally.
Fixed
- When the last window closes, the Dock icon goes away and the keyboard returns to the app you were working in.
How to uninstall
In the app: Shotlark menu → «Uninstall Shotlark…» (or Settings → About). Removes the app, its settings, capture history and editor projects, its Privacy permissions and the login item. Captures you saved to your own folders stay. Only a small shared folder, kvp-projects/licensing, stays: it remembers since when you’ve been with us and keeps your key, if you have one — for all my apps at once. None of your texts or files are in it.
Planning to come back? Tick «Keep my data and settings» — install Shotlark again and everything will be there.
By hand (for older versions)
Open Terminal, paste the line and press Return. It quits Shotlark and deletes it along with its data. The line is for zsh/bash (the standard Terminal). The app goes to the Trash via Finder — macOS asks once whether Terminal may control Finder.
